Thousands of young volleyball players will descend on Reno July 2-7 to compete in the 2007 Volleyball Festival, one the largest sporting events for girls in the world. Joining them will be hundreds of college coaches from across the nation, who will be identifying players for college athletic scholarships in the coming months and years.
One of the volleyball clubs competing at the Volleyball Festival will be the Capital City Volleyball Club, located in Carson City, which includes more than 160 athletes from throughout Northern Nevada, ages 10-18. Club Director Danny McLaughlin, who also has guided Whittell High School to four straight Nevada State Championships, says Capital City VBC has an ace up its sleeve when it comes to assisting girls in attaining a college scholarship.
McLaughlin says the club is unique in that it has a designated College Recruiting Coordinator, Jim Saari, who previously coached at the college level at Ohio State, U. of Utah, U. of South Florida, and U. of Nevada, where he served as the recruiter for many of those programs: "Jim uses his background and experience with the recruiting process, not to mention a wealth of contacts, to assist Capital City players in the recruiting process. He works diligently to identify the types of colleges that would most likely fit the individual player's academic and athletic abilities, and then he aggressively pursues the coaches in those programs, imploring them to make sure they watch Capital City VBC matches."
Thanks in large part to Jim's efforts, over the past two years, every high school senior playing in the Capital City VBC seeking a scholarship has received full or partial aid. This year's seniors include: Tai Jaques, Southern Oregon (Spring Creek H.S.); Bridgette Boswell, Chadron State (Churchill County H.S.); Lindsay Ford, Hartford (Carson H.S.); Jessica Woods, Wright State (Whittell H.S.); Kelly Karmann, Cornell (Whittell H.S.); Diana Rutt, Franklin Pierce (Dayton H.S.); and Shaylene McLaughlin, Lindenwood (South Tahoe H.S.).
