The 2007 Volleyball Festival is underway in Reno, with more than 700 teams and 8,000 players competing in the event, billed as the largest sporting event for girls in the world. Two local teams from the Capital City Volleyball Club out of Carson City are seeded very high in the tournament. The Club's 16 Black team is seeded 8th out of 188 teams in their Division, and the 15 Black team is 21st in a field of 111 teams.
Capital City VBC has 16 teams competing in the weeklong tournament-the third highest number of entered teams from one club in the field-with team members coming from Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Elko, Lyon, and Washoe counties. Capital City has teams competing in virtually every Division, 12 year olds through 17 year olds.
Capital City Volleyball Club Director Danny McLaughlin, the head coach of the 15 Black team and the varsity volleyball coach at Whittell High School, says his team stands a very good chance of moving up in the standings, with a top 20 finish as his team's goal. The 15 Black team is led by outside hitter Jourdan Burke (Douglas H.S.), and setters Alyssa Meihack (Churchill County H.S.) and Lauren Andrew (Whittell H.S.).
The 16 Black team enters the prestigious tournament with high hopes of competing for a spot in the top eight. Top performers include Kayla Lommori (Yerington H.S.), Emily Aguiar (Galena H.S.), Megan Mitchell (Douglas H.S.), and Melanie Lashbrook (Truckee H.S.). Coach Steve George thinks his team is primed and ready to compete against the very best teams in the event.
